Who is your Kuldevata

As a child, I was always fascinated by my grandmother’s talent to trace connections long before the era of Facebook and LinkedIn. She would begin by asking, “Tummi khanche (gavche)?” inquiring about a person’s ancestral village. From there, she would link their last name to the region, throw in a few names of people she knew, and within minutes, the room would fill with nods of recognition and warm familiarity. Somewhere during this conversation, another crucial question would inevitably surface: “Kuldev kancho tumgelo?” asking after their family deity.

In the GSB (Goud Saraswat Brahmin) tradition, every family is anchored by a Kuldevata (lineage deity). While GSBs worship various gods according to personal faith, the Kuldevata holds a sacred, irreplaceable status akin to one’s parents. The followers of the Kuldevata are called kulavis. It is a spiritual identity assigned at birth and passed down through the patriarchal lineage; children inherit the Kuldevata of their father, and women adopt the Kuldevata of their husband’s family upon marriage.

The profound significance of the Kuldevata is evident in the hardships our ancestors endured, sacrificing their lives to protect and relocate these sacred idols from desecration. Today, most of the primary Kuldevata temples stand in Goa, with a few located in Karnataka.

A Note for the Reader: The list provided below is not exhaustive and regional variations exist. You are highly encouraged to speak with your family elders and extended family (Jayje) to discover or confirm your own Kuldevata.
