Shri Moodu Mahaganapathi Temple, Karkala

Nestled in the serene Bandimatt area of Karkala lies a unique temple dedicated to Lord Ganapathi—a place renowned among devotees for bestowing the cherished blessing of progeny.

The origins of this sacred site trace back to the deeply moving story of Shrimati Sridevi Shenoy. Grieving the untimely loss of her youngest son, Ganapathi Shenoy, to a fatal illness, she sought solace in unwavering devotion to Lord Ganapathi. Her prayers, filled with sorrow and longing, eventually led to a divine encounter. In a dream, the Lord appeared to her, revealing that her son’s brief life was part of a greater cosmic plan. He also guided her to search her garden for an idol.

Compelled by faith, Sridevi searched her home garden and, to her astonishment, discovered a small porcelain idol of Lord Ganapathi. She began worshipping it with immense devotion. Eventually, the family moved to Bandimatt in Karkala, where they ran a small hotel—bringing the idol with them.

What followed was nothing short of remarkable. Though the exact origins remain unclear, word began to spread about the miraculous nature of the idol. Devotees from near and far started visiting the Shenoy residence, seeking the Lord's blessings, especially those yearning to be blessed with children. As the number of visitors grew, managing the influx became challenging.

Seeking divine guidance, the family consulted the esteemed astrologer Shri Devadas Sharma about relocating the idol to a nearby temple. His reading revealed a clear message: the Lord wished to remain exactly where He was. With deep faith and community support, the Shenoy family made a life-changing decision—they sold all their possessions and, together with help from the generous locals, built a temple on the same site.

In 1999, the temple was formally consecrated, housing a grand stone idol of Lord Ganapathi alongside the original porcelain idol that started it all. Today, the Bandimatt temple stands as a symbol of unwavering devotion, divine reassurance, and the extraordinary power of faith.

Perhaps, also this is why the temple is called Moodu meaning 'one that appeared' in Kannada.
