Shri LakshmiNarayana Temple, Hejamadi

The Shri LakshmiNarayana Temple in Hejamadi (not be confused with Hemmadi) is popular as Mallyera (belonging to Mallya) Mutt. It is one of the five temples constructed by the Mahale family of Honavar (initially the Mallya family) who were prominent and influential traders and courtiers with the Keladi Nayak rulers. The one in Venkatapura could not be traced, the others are mentioned below:

  1. Shri Venkatramana Temple, Gangolli
  2. Bete Shri Veera Venkatramana Temple, Honavar.
  3. Shri Varadaraja Venkataramana Temple, Kasargod


The Hejamadi temple in particular was built sometime in the 17th Century by Narayana Mallya and extremely influential person during the Keladi rule. The main deities here are:

  1. Lord Lakshmi Narayana
  2. Veera Vitthala
  3. Srinivasa

In olden days, it was the only place of worship for the residents in the surrounding areas. It is said that the famed Mruga Bhete – a grand procession on Karthik Punav covers around 20km away from Hejamadi. The temple was renovated in 2003.
